Manic Street Preachers：第十張專輯

自四年前至今，威爾斯樂團Manic Street Preachers先後合共出版過三張專輯，密產程度簡直回復到他們在90年代(甚至是Richey James Edwards尚未失踪時)的狀態。《Postcards From A Young Man》不但是他們繼去年讓Richey之滄海遺珠歌詞重見天日、重投1994年經典《The Holy Bible》歌路的《Journal For Plague Lovers》專輯後之所作，也是他們的第十張專輯。

早前跟的主將James Dean Bradfield做過電話專訪，他說Manics是有兩種不同的風格，一種是《The Holy Bible》、《Journal For Plague Lovers》的，而另一種則《Everything Must Go》、《Send Away The Tigers》，前者較沉重較Post-Punk，後者則較修飾較流行曲。那麼今次《Postcards From A Young Man》便是屬於後者。

先行單曲〈(It's Not War) Just The End Of Love〉的70年代Classic Rock曲式下，清爽得來亦有如前作〈Your Love Alone Is Not Enough〉般醒神搶耳的Chorus，MV由《Frost/Nixon》男主角Michael Sheen領銜主演。70年代搖滾的薰陶在專輯裡可謂比比皆是，主題曲〈Postcards From A Young Man〉開宗明義投射出Queen對James的影響，〈The Descent’ (Pages 1 & 2)〉有如George Harrison的個人作品遇上〈Hunky Dory〉時期的David Bowie，〈Golden Platitudes〉亦聲言是取自The Beach Boys鼓手Dennis Wilson的1977年首張個人專輯《Pacific Ocean Blue》的聲音，尤其那Gospel唱詠，〈All We Make Is Entertainment〉的結他主奏叫我聯想到Bill Nelson的Art Rock樂團Be Bop Deluxe。

《Postcards From A Young Man》裡的另一焦點，還有那三位客席樂手的出現。〈Some Kind Of Nothingness〉由James與Echo & The Bunnymen主將Ian McCulloch合唱，也是他首次作男男合唱，再伴以波瀾壯闊的Gopel唱詠。有如Glam Rock遇上Motorik節拍的〈Auto-Intoxication〉裡有前The Velvet Underground的John Cale彈奏式衣車縫紉式鋼琴與聲效。〈A Billion Balconies Facing The Sun〉則有前Guns N’ Roses的Duff McKagan彈低音結他，內容是對互聯網文化作探討，歌曲則是有如Fleetwood Mac的70年代搖滾。

〈I Think I Found It〉由James包辦曲詞，美好的Mandola主奏，動人而又Bitter-Sweet的程度可以與他從前的〈Ocean Spray〉媲美。上次Nicky Wire獨唱了一曲〈William's Last Words〉，今次亦有他演繹出的〈The Future Has Been Here 4 Ever〉，曲中還有Sean Moore的小號伴奏。
